A multi-output version of the Keras VGG19 network for deep features extraction used in the perceptual loss. The super-scaling Residual in Residual Dense Network described in ESRGAN: Enhanced Super-Resolution Generative Adversarial Networks (Wang et al.The super-scaling Residual Dense Network described in Residual Dense Network for Image Super-Resolution (Zhang et al.This project contains Keras implementations of different Residual Dense Networks for Single Image Super-Resolution (ISR) as well as scripts to train these networks using content and adversarial loss components. They weren’t perfect, but it did a far better job than many other tools I’ve tried over the years for similar tasks and with almost no effort. The goal of this project is to upscale and improve the quality of low resolution images.

Overall, I was very pleased with the results. I pulled from a handful of games to try and test a variety of images. No additional processing was done other than applying this feature.

In the gallery below, I processed a series of images taken directly off of the Switch’s SD card using Pixelmator Pro’s ML Super Resolution. Naturally, there is an inherent inaccuracy with this process as the computer is adding pixels to an image that do not exist, but a sophisticated tool should be able to intelligently add these pixels in a way that avoids distorting the image. It suddenly dawned on me that this scenario is exactly the situation that ML Super Resolution was designed for - take a lower resolution image and upscale it using modern technologies to avoid excessive losses in quality.

All image captures, whether taken in docked or handheld mode, are in 720p and while they’re passable for a quick scroll by on Twitter when viewed from a smartphone, if you really look at the image - or maybe set it as desktop wallpaper because Sherb is so cute - it will become immediately apparent that most devices have moved well beyond the graphic capabilities of the Switch.Įnter Pixelmator Pro. Sadly, the lack of resolution isn’t so well hidden when you share static screen captures.

To be honest, I find the 720p portable and 1080p- ish gaming experience perfectly enjoyable and have never really found myself taking notice of the lack of 4K graphics. One of those is a compromise on the maximum resolution that the system can handle. While the Switch is easily my favorite and, in my opinion, the most innovative console of this generation, that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t have some shortcomings.

This feature isn’t only useful for older media though, in this post I decided to test it with a few modern pieces - screenshots from the Nintendo Switch. I found the idea intriguing in no small part because my “Retina” 5K iMac display has highlighted just how low resolution so many assets are - especially when it comes to older media. The idea was to utilize machine learning in order upscale lower resolution images without an excessive loss in detail or clarity. However, on the rare occasion that I need to modify an image to create an uninspiring office meme, Pixelmator makes me feel like I’m actually accomplishing something graphically productive.īack in December 2019, the Pixelmator Team added a feature dubbed ML Super Resolution to the application. I will admit that image editing is not something that I enjoy or even actively practice.

Pixelmator Pro is an image editing application developed by the Pixelmator Team for macOS as a follow up to the successful Pixelmator application. I did not intend for my second post on this site to be gaming-related, but this particular topic is something I’ve been excited to write about since I discovered its use a few weeks ago.
